Supreme Master Kim Bok-Man
Supreme Master Bok Man Kim’s martial journey has been like no other. It began in 1941 when he was just seven. He taught hand-to-hand combat to fellow soldiers during the Korean War before joining General Choi Hong-Hi to develop, teach and demonstrate the newly-named Korean martial art of Taekwon-do. Gen. Choi relied upon Supreme Master Kim to help develop and prepare the first English textbook about Taekwon-do, published in 1965. In 1966, Supreme Master Kim developed the first Korean weapons patterns for Taekwondo — the Silla Knife and Silla Pole patterns. Supreme Master Kim continued to develop Taekwondo into a complete system of empty-hand and weapons patterns and techniques until his death in August 2021. He named his curriculum Chun Kuhn Taekwondo, also called Chun Kuhn Do.
Taekwon-do Pioneer & Legend
Supreme Master Bok Man Kim (1934-2021)
Legendary Taekwondo founding pioneer Supreme Master Kim Bok-Man passed away on August 14, 2021. Grandmaster Deborah Henckel, General Secretary of the U.S. Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Federation and long-time student of Supreme Master Kim, assembled this video tribute to this amazing martial artist. This video contains never-before-seen footage of Supreme Master Kim’s demonstration of Taekwon-do in the Philippine palace of President Ferdinand Marcos in 1970, as well as footage from one of Supreme Master Kim’s feature films produced in Hong Hong from 1973-1974, and photographs of Supreme Master Kim and the many instructors who cherish him and continue to celebrate his life and legacy as they teach Chun Kuhn Taekwondo.
Supreme Master Kim spent his life dedicated to the martial arts, especially Taekwondo. His will was forged of such material that he was able to hold death at bay until his last scheduled seminar ended. The seminar was broadcast via Zoom to his hospital room on August 14, 2021, where he could hear – and see if he were to open his eyes – the seminar activities progress for the day. As soon as the seminar concluded, and the Zoom session ended, Supreme Master Kim passed quietly but contentedly away.
Many of the images are selected from Supreme Master Bok Man Kim’s award-winning book, Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim’s Historic Photospective (1955-2015). Appearing in the photographs are noted historical figures of Taekwon-Do, including General Choi Hong Hi, Nam Tae Hi, Han Cha Kyo, Woo Jae Lim, Rhee Ki Ha and others.
