Martial Arts Center Hosts Supreme Master Bok Man Kim for Book Signing
Master Y. J. Kim’s Martial Arts Center hosted legendary Taekwondo pioneer Supreme Grandmaster Bok Man Kim on March 22, 2021 for a book signing in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
SGM Bok Man Kim, an original founding pioneer of Taekwondo and the father of Southeast Asian Taekwondo, helped General Hong Hi Choi (Founder of Taekwondo) develop 15 of the patterns in Malaysia from 1962-1964, patterns which would be adopted by the International Taekwon-do Federation in March 1966. These were the first Korean patterns ever developed for Taekwondo.
The tuls Supreme Master Kim helped develop are Chon-Ji, Dan-Gun, Do-San, Won-Hyo, Yul-Gok, Joong-Gun, Toi-Gye, Kwang-Gae, Po-Eun, Choon-Jang, Ko-Dang, Yoo-Sin, Choi-Yong, Se-Jong, and Tong-Il. Bok Man Kim has further said that he also provided some input on five additional tuls – Hwa-Rang, Eui-Am, Se-Jong, Chung-Mu and Gye-Baek – but that input was considerably less. This brings the number of tuls influenced by SGM Bok Man Kim to 20.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, students were required to make reservations at the dojang’s web site to meet Supreme Master Kim and purchase copies of his books. Students could choose to purchase Taekwondo: Defenses Against Weapons and/or Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim’s Historic Photospective (1955-2015). Supreme Master Kim signed books and posed for photographs with students during the event. Purchasers of both books also received a complimentary Chun Kuhn Taekwondo lapel pin.
“The event was a resounding success,” said Grandmaster Brad Shipp, President of the World Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Federation, founded by Supreme Master Kim. “Despite COVID precautions, students were able to spend 15 minutes with Supreme Master Kim while he signed their books and posed with them for photographs.”
“Master Y. J. Kim was a great host,” Supreme Master Kim noted following the event. “I hope to be able to visit Master Kim and his students again when we can safely train Taekwondo together,” he added.
